CS Tea: Isayas Adhanom presents "Towards Creating Universally Usable Extended Reality Systems"
Dr. Isayas Berhe Adhanom, a President's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Minnesota, will be giving a talk on his research on Extended Reality (XR) and cybersickness.
Abstract: Extended Reality (XR) systems are rapidly evolving, transcending their initial boundaries in entertainment and gaming and expanding into critical domains such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and defense. However, significant usability challenges, such as cybersickness, have limited their practical utility across these domains. These challenges not only compromise the user experience but also adversely affect user performance and behavior, thereby limiting the effectiveness and versatility of XR across various fields. In this talk, I will discuss the interdisciplinary approach my research takes to deepen our understanding of cybersickness and develop effective mitigation techniques. I will highlight the novel contextual and perceptual adaptation techniques that my research has explored to mitigate cybersickness and improve usability, particularly within Virtual Reality environments. Finally, I will discuss my research vision, which revolves around the creation of usable, safe, and secure XR systems with wide-ranging applicability across multiple domains.
